Aaliyah
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16th 1979 in Brooklyn, New York City. Her name is pronounced "ah-lee-yah" and is arabic for "highest, most exalted one". She became well known in the mid 90's. R. Kelly first recognisd her and he fostered her carer at the beginning. Then rumours began hat the two of had a relationship and that they were married, but they wern't true, Aaliyah was only 15. At this young age, in 1994, she released her debut album, "Age ain't nothing but a number" which included the US top single "back & forth".

She was a student at the Detroit High School of the Performing Arts. She remained a "straight A's" student throughout the first stage of her recording career, persevering with her education despite commercial success. She broke her partneship with R Kelly, she released her second album in 1996 which was called "One in a million", she worked on his album with producer Timbaland. This album included the single "Are You That Somebody?" which was the soundtrack for Dr. Dolittle.


Aaliyah began filming on her screen debut in Andrzej Bartkowiak's Romeo Must Die. "Try Again", taken from the movie soundtrack, went to the top of the US singles chart in June 2000. The following year's self-titled third album demonstrated a new maturity and confidence, with Aaliyah publically bidding farewell to her teenage years and fashioning a bold new sound with collaborator Timbaland. Tragedy struck in August 2001 when, after filming the video "Rock the boat" in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and various members of her record company attempted to fly home.Eight people other than Aaliyah were killed. The small light aircraft crashed killing Aaliyah and her entourage. Her third album posthumously climbed to the number 1 position in America, while in the UK "More Than A Woman" reached the top of the singles chart in January 2002. This was aaliyah's first uk number 1 single.
